Repost: India 2009 Vol. I

Travel journals: Volume 1- Prelude

I intend to update this blog on a semi-regular basis while I'm away on the Indian Expedition so that you can all stay informed as to my doings abroad. I thought I would get the whole thing kicked off with a short piece I wrote on the bus ride to Philly. Hope you like it.

Dec. 23rd, 2008:

Through the salt haze of the window, I see the farmsteads and hamlets of upstate New York as the bus barrels through them. Last night's snowfall lies fresh and relatively unspoiled on the scrubby fields and old barns. Set aglow by the early morning sunlight the world looks like one of those idyllic winter scenes on Christmas cards. (The overall effect is slightly spoiled by the occasional giant inflatable Santa.) Looking out at the snow frosted pines and vast expanses of almost unmarred white, it is strange to think that the next time I see these hills, nascent green leaves will be forming on the oaks and maples. The only snow then left will be abandoned scarves draped negligently among the roots, to accent the mud brown and sprouting greens of early spring. I can only wonder what I will think then as I return to the place that has been my home for the past eight years from the other side of the world
