The strangest part of preparing for this journey for me has been having to think about it.
Packing has become an automatic process for me. Toss some clean "show blacks" into the bag, along with the laptop and whatever i happen to be reading and i'm set for a week. This time it's different. My current expedition is two pronged and i need to be sure that i have everything i'll require for over a month. After all, once I set out tomorrow morning there is no turning back.
It would be impossible to carry everything i needed in just one bag and impractical to take everything along with me on the plane. Fortunately, my boss, John has kindly offered to transport whatever i won't want to bring to Guatemala back with him. The first bag contains performance clothes, and everyday essentials such as boxers and toiletries. This is the kit i'll be using in Mesa. When it's time to head south I'll transfer certain items into the backpack which already contains lightweight summer garments, a towel, some bedding and my passport. Ordinarily packing only takes me a few minutes. this time it took several hours of fussing over minutiae. Making certain that i remembered to pack my belt, that the right guidebooks were in the right bags and making sure i thought to pack the camera charger and the international power adapter together has brought home the reality of this voyage for me.
After making certain one last time that the spanish phrasebook is where i can easily get to it, I pulled the zipper closed a final time knowing that from this moment on the adventure has officially begun.
